How did you select an organization to support? What would you want someone to know about the organization?
A corporate client proposed that we partner with its in-house attorneys to conduct quarterly clinics with the SeniorLAW Center to prepare life planning documents for seniors. The SeniorLAW Center has provided us with all the tools to make the clinics a success, including attorney training and attending each clinic to answer any questions that may arise.
The SeniorLAW Center also provides a wide range of other services for low-income elderly, including protection from long-term care abuse, and assisting homeowners with contractor fraud, utility shut-offs, mortgage foreclosures, tax problems, administration of estates, and title issues. It also provides legal advice and representation to senior relatives who wish to participate in the care and placement of children in their families who are involved in the Philadelphia child welfare system. There are opportunities for attorneys to help with all of these services.
Why should other lawyers get involved in pro bono service?
Donating even a few hours of your time can make a significant difference in the lives of members of our community who are in dire need of legal service. It might also make a difference in your life. Most pro bono clients face daily struggles that are unimaginable to us and many have overcome tremendous hardships in their lives. Hearing their stories can be inspirational.
What advice do you have for lawyers who want to get involved in pro bono service?
Pro bono opportunities come in many shapes and sizes; there’s undoubtedly at least one that fits your interests and schedule. If time is a concern, consider volunteering for a few hours to answer questions on an agency’s telephone helpline or participate at a pro bono clinic. Partnering with a colleague can help with scheduling conflicts. Pro bono agencies also provide terrific training and support for their volunteers, so consider selecting a project because it inspires or intrigues you regardless of whether it’s related to your area of expertise. Just get started. You’ll be glad that you did.
