Healthcare 250: Then, Now and Next

SEPTEMBER 22, 2026 | 8:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.

In 2009, White and Williams’ HealthCare Practice Group hosted its inaugural Healthcare Summit at the College of Physicians, establishing a forum designed to equip risk managers, patient safety and quality personnel, healthcare general counsel, and other industry professionals with insights into emerging issues, evolving trends, and the risks impacting the practice of medicine, nursing, and other healthcare services. Over the years, the HealthCare Summit evolved into MEDx Talks, but its core mission remains the same. The program continues to focus on the evolving healthcare landscape, with particular emphasis on healthcare technology, patient safety and quality, the legal environment, emerging risk, and the impact on the delivery of care. As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in the city where our nation was founded – and widely recognized as the cradle of American medicine – White and Williams is proud to present a special event featuring an exceptional lineup of distinguished speakers.  Together, they will reflect on how we can learn from the past, examine the challenges and opportunities of today, and explore how healthcare may move forward into our collective future.

Presentation Description

Think Inside the Jar: Medical Museum Collections as Biorepositories

Medical museums are often viewed as places that preserve the history of medicine, but their collections also hold tremendous potential for advancing modern scientific research. This presentation will explore how historical medical specimens can serve as biorepositories, providing new opportunities to study the evolution of infectious diseases, human health, and medical practice through cutting-edge techniques such as ancient DNA analysis and biomolecular research. Drawing on examples from the Dhody Research Institute's work, including historical vaccination materials and fluid-preserved pathological specimens, this talk will explain how interdisciplinary collaborations between museums, clinicians, and scientists are transforming collections into active research resources that continue to inform public health, biomedical discovery, and our understanding of the past.

RaDonda Vaught, BSN

RaDonda Vaught is a former registered nurse whose sentinel event became a catalyst for important conversations. Following the medical error and subsequent criminal prosecution, RaDonda found herself at the center of a national discussion about human error, just culture, and the unintended consequences of blame-based responses to failure. She chose to transform it into an opportunity for education, advocacy, and systems improvement. Today, RaDonda speaks with healthcare organizations, professional associations, safety leaders, and industry groups to explore the complex relationship between human performance, systems, leadership, and workforce resilience.

Presentation Description

The Cost of a Broken System: Human Error, System Failures, and Criminalizing Mistakes

In this candid and thought-provoking discussion, RaDonda will share the clinical events that led to her criminal prosecution and the life-changing consequences that followed. Drawing from her personal experience, she will explore how system failures, competing demands, workplace culture, and organizational pressures can influence human behavior and contribute to medical errors. By sharing her story, RaDonda hopes to help healthcare professionals and organizations better understand some of the complex factors that can underlie mistakes, foster meaningful learning from adverse events, and advance patient safety while maintaining compassion for those involved.

Presentation Description

The Science of Serving and Connecting with Others

What if the most powerful thing you could do for your own health, happiness, and professional success was to stop focusing on yourself? Or what if healthcare providers and practitioners concentrate on making genuine human connections instead of their computer screens? In this talk, physician-scientist Anthony Mazzarelli, MD, JD, makes a counterintuitive, evidence-backed case: serving and being kind to others isn't just good for the people you help - it measurably benefits you. Lower stress, better cardiovascular health, more resilience, a longer life. Not as a feel-good slogan, but as a finding that holds up in the data - across medicine, neuroscience, and the high-stakes professions where burnout has become the norm rather than the exception. Serving others is not a cost we personally pay but a benefit we receive. Further, evidence demonstrates healthcare organizations also benefit when their clinicians demonstrate compassion and kindness. Dr. Mazzarelli reframes how we think about success, burnout, and what it actually means to take care of ourselves and others - whether you wear a white coat or work on behalf of a company or a client.
