John has over 25 years of experience in insurance coverage, “bad faith” and other litigation. He represents insurance company clients in coverage disputes involving environmental pollution, asbestos and other complex claims.
John has committed himself to understanding and serving his clients’ needs, delivering maximum value and upholding the firm’s long and proud tradition of excellence, commitment and creativity. He has been involved in sophisticated insurance-related cases in California, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Vermont. Among these are substantial coverage matters involving numerous Superfund and other hazardous waste sites around the country and abroad and thousands of underlying asbestos and other “long tail” claims. In addition to liability coverage, John has experience handling first-party property cases and has defended insurance agents/brokers malpractice and other tort and contract claims.
During law school, John served on the staff of the Rutgers Law Journal and authored two criminal law publications. He also interned with the Honorable Edward R. Becker of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
John has judged law school moot court programs and served as a court appointed arbitrator in tort and contract cases. He successfully completed the Dickinson School of Law trial advocacy program for practicing lawyers.
Representative Matters
- Represents insurer in federal court coverage action involving alleged environmental pollution at multiple former manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites with earliest first operations reportedly predating Civil War
- Represented excess insurer in connection with liability claims for alleged catastrophic injuries from a fall at a construction project
- Represents multiple insurers in connection with numerous environmental, asbestos and other underlying claims involving Fortune 500 company policyholder
- Obtained favorable ruling on pollution exclusion in environmental coverage litigation with a policyholder in bankruptcy over numerous dye/chemical manufacturing and other sites
- Successfully defended excess insurer in litigation involving fraudulent conspiracy allegations by underlying mass tort claimants
- GenCorp, Inc. v. AIU Ins. Co., 297 F.Supp.2d 995 (N.D. Ohio 2003), aff’d, 138 Fed.Appx. 732 (6th Cir. 2005) Affirming summary judgment for excess insurers on allocation and full settlement credits
- Lear v. Township of Piscataway, et al., 566 A.2d 557 (N.J. App. Div. 1989) Addressing scope of Constitutional rights of pre-trial detainees
Recognition & Involvement
John regularly participates in a pro bono partnership with the SeniorLAW Center and one of the firm’s institutional clients, conducting life planning clinics where lawyers draft wills and powers of attorneys for seniors.
