WHAT is the name of the organization you ARE involved with?
Philadelphia VIP. Its mission is to promote equal justice for the poor by providing civil legal services not otherwise available, collaborating with other legal services organizations and promoting a culture of volunteerism by educating and exposing attorneys and law students to issues of poverty.
what would you want someone to know about your organization? how did you get involved?
I would recommend VIP unequivocally. Cases are interesting and challenging, and VIP is very supportive as an organization. I was drawn to VIP based on the types of cases they encounter and the opportunity to make a very real impact on clients' lives.
can you describe a recent case or memorable moment?
Recently, a Philly-based small business owner faced tax issues that were largely out of his control, but threatened to close down his business. I was able to work with the IRS to get the hardworking entrepreneur's taxes placed into a non-collectable status.
why should lawyers get involved in pro bono service?
I feel that pro bono service is an important part of our professional responsibility. More importantly, VIP's clients in particular are always very appreciative and the entire experience is very rewarding.
