Tim Stapleton specializes in the resolution of reinsurance coverage disputes, representing insurance and reinsurance companies in arbitration and litigation involving property, casualty and life insurance, and counsels clients on complex reinsurance claim and contract issues.

Prior to joining White and Williams, Tim worked as in-house litigation counsel for a major property and casualty insurer, where he focused on reinsurance disputes.  He has worked on numerous high stakes reinsurance cases dealing with issues including insolvency, fronting and pooling arrangements, the duty of utmost good faith, international insurance/reinsurance transactions, loss aggregation and extra-contractual obligations.

While in law school, Tim interned for the Honorable John G. Koeltl in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and was an associate editor of the Brooklyn Law Review.  His article, “The Electronic Communications Privacy Act and Cell Location Data: Is the Whole More Than the Sum of its Parts?” was published in Volume 73.

Representative Matters

  • Collected reinsurance related to 9/11 losses over a reinsurer’s number of occurrences argument
  • Developed litigation strategy in support of a portfolio transfer on behalf of a reinsurer facing insolvency
  • Secured a favorable settlement on a disputed commutation of worker’s compensation liability

Recognition & Involvement

Tim is active in the Philadelphia art community.  He has participated in classes and workshops at the Philadelphia Sketch Club and Studio Incamminati.  He recently won an honorable mention for an original piece submitted to the Wilkes-Barre Fine Arts Fiesta.
